5 Months!

We didn't have a doctor's appointment for 5 months so I weighed Colbie on my scale at home and estimate she's about 14.5 lbs. I have no idea how long she is but I can tell she's getting longer. She is just so big!

She still doesn't sleep through the night. Recently she's been going 3-4 hours which is nice but then she also has some bad nights. She's also been getting up earlier than usual so now instead of getting to sleep in late, we're usually up around 8:00 but that's okay too.

Here she is at 5 months old:

Colbie's First Tastes of Food

Our doctor okay-ed starting Colbie on real food. After our last appointment we took a trip to Target to get some baby cereal for her to try. We were both very excited to see how she would react. When we got home, I mixed a tablespoon of cereal with 2 ounces of breast milk. The cereal mixed in and it remained about the same consistency as regular breast milk. I was surprised because I thought it would be thicker. We put her in her high chair and gave her a tiny bit of the tip of a baby spoon. She loved the spoon and just started sucking on it. I think she was a little surprised to find that it tasted like food too. She didn't quite understand swallowing at first. For her first feeding, about half of the cereal mixture ended up on her face, bib, lap, etc. She ate about an ounce before she was bored with it. The next night she understood a little better and she got excited when she saw the spoon. I thickened it up a little bit and after a few nights she really got the hang of actually swallowing.

We also bought some containers of baby food so after she mastered the cereal, we decided to try some carrots. She was definitely not a fan at first. She would get really excited when she saw the spoon but once she actually tasted the carrots, she would scrunch up her nose and keep the carrots on her tongue, refusing to swallow. Eventually she would close her mouth and the carrots would come out all over her face and bib. We tried carrots for three nights in a row and on the third night, she decided that she liked them. She ate everything I had put in the bowl.

We have given her carrots, peas, apples, and sweet potatoes. She likes the carrots and apples, hates the peas and loves the sweet potatoes. We still trying the peas but every time I give her sweet potatoes, she eats the whole bowl. If I mix a little peas with the potatoes, she doesn't seem to notice.

I plan to make most of my baby food but we just bought a couple different things to try for the first time. Hopefully I will start making some things this week. We'll see how it goes!
